An Entity-relationship Approach to Modelling Database User Interfaces

چکیده
Progress of research into user interfaces to database systems has been slow in comparison to that in other areas of database theory. Whilst interfaces for non-expert access to database systems have been well catered for, little work has been undertaken in allowing end-users to develop their own interfaces. The work in this paper addresses this problem by developing the necessary theory to allow non-expert customisation of database user interfaces. The forms schema is developed as an abstract representation of a user interface and a set of transformations extract an extended Entity-Relationship schema describing an interface's information content. A simple notion of equivalent information content is also presented.

1 Experiences with Super , a Database Visual Environment
We present our experiences with building SUPER 1 , a database environment based on a structurally object-oriented entity-relationship model, called ERC+. SUPER is designed to be a semantically rich user-friendly front-end to existing relational or object-oriented database systems. We focus on the functionalities of visual direct manipulation interfaces of SUPER, in particular the schema and the...

Background and Aim: The present investigation intends to compare and review various user interfaces from user standpoint and to ascertain its linkage with user satisfaction. Method: The research incorporated a descriptive survey of University of Tehran graduate student body. Using a targeted sampling, graduate students from the faculties of chemistry and Biology were selected. The instruments u...
متن کاملInformation modelling: foundation, abstraction mechanisms and approach
This paper briefly presents a new information modelling methodology useful as an information systems development approach. The methodology is based on a set of fundamental abstraction mechanisms, which provide the means for modelling on a number of abstraction levels and, on the highest levels, the most invariant components and structures of the information model can be identified and defined. ...
متن کاملEntity-Relationship Database User Interfaces
We report on experience with database user interfaces that are entity-relationship oriented, rather than relation-oriented, and provide a new level of ease-of-use for information management. Our goal is to allow technical workers with little or no knowledge of database systems, query languages, or relational terminology to use databases to solve simple information management problems. Our tools...

to determine the answer the user's query. I. INTRODUCTION Typically, natural language database interfaces use parsing to identify and categorise the user's input [1]. The parsing process requires the creation of a lexicon, which includes both database specific and non-database specific terms. Different natural language database interfaces (NLDI's) use different methods to create the database sp...
